On occasion, it is customary for an artist
to express the reasons for his work. More often than not,
we read very deep philosophical expressions and explanations.
There is no deep philosophical explanation for this latest
work. No long and esoteric discourse on searching for some
new horizons.
Simply, this particular group of paintings
had its inspiration from my grandson, Noah. As a one year
old, he had done several drawings of circles in various colors.
I was fascinated by them and decided to turn one of the them
into a painting (see Circles). As a result, I started to more
closely study children's works and gathered as much visual
vocabulary of their work as possible.
As adults, we cannot think or draw like
children. We can only try to imitate or copy them. Even then,
you can only approximate their way of thinking. Children have
a wonderful imagination, unburdened by all the baggage that
we carry as adults. They express themselves in such a simple,
warm, often humorous and entertaining way.
I tried to capture that feeling in these
paintings. And, although inspired by their drawings, I have
tried to give the work a contemporary feel and sophistication.
For all of us, it's impossible to
remember the joy, the fun that we felt drawing and coloring
as children. But, the joy and fun I felt doing these paintings
gives me a pretty good idea what that was like.
